Pennies for Peace
A Program Benefiting the Central Asia Institute April 1st through May 18th
Through May 18th The Hopeful Heretics continue their push for pennies to benefit the Central Asia Institute. Founded by Greg Mortenson, CAI builds schools and provides education to children in Pakistan and Afghanistan...all in an effort to counter extremism in those areas. Supporting this program helps build a foundation of hope and stability in that region...and if efforts like this are successful, it has the potential to benefit our local men and women who serve in, or near, those regions. If you’d like more information on this organization, please see me, visit www.penniesforpeace.org, or pick up a copy of the bestseller, Three Cups of Tea.
Legacy Project — Growing Older: The Ultimate, Non-Optional, Challenge
Monday, May 19th, lunch at noon, discussion to follow
We live in a culture more interested in “rock hard abs” than nimble, wise minds. Our society worships at the Cult of Youth, but as that critical mass called the “baby boomers” gets gray, those of us with wrinkles are getting more press. What is the secret of growing old? When the vision gets fuzzy, the joints stiff, and the limbs achy...how do you move ahead with grace, courage, and humor? What has been your experience, what advice would you give, and what can our society do to better “tap into” and support the rich experience of our sages? Join us for a time of fellowship and reflection, as we ponder the great challenges and blessings of meeting the “fullness” of years. So I have an idea on food for lunch, please see me or sign up at the Program Table to express your interest. But if you want to join us at the last minute come ahead.
Quantum Qlub — Out of this World History, Literally
The Phoenix Mars Lander, Sunday, May 25th Denver Museum of Nature & Science
Spirit and Opportunity, those spunky, overachieving Mars Rovers will soon have company. On May 25th, the Phoenix Mars Lander (built in Colorado) is scheduled to set down on the Red Planet’s arctic plains — and start probing the soil. The DMNS will feed the NASA telecast into the IMAX theatre where, God and technology willing, shots of tense scientists will yield to the first pictures from the Phoenix. The Museum’s space curator will be on hand to explain, respond, and enlighten. (The Space Odyssey exhibit will also be open.) The coverage is from 4:00 to 9:30 p.m., with “come and go” privileges for ticket holders. I’m looking for folks interested in this opportunity — please see/call/email me. Cost is $10 adult, $5 child/student.
Popcorn Theology 101 — Tactical Version 2.0
Popcorn and the search for meaning (mostly) on the Big Screen. In the past we’ve scheduled specific dates for PT outings, only to have the movie selection be less than entertaining or inspiring. So I’m trying a different angle...tactical movie selections. When a movie of note hits the big screen I’ll get the word out and plan an outing...using a list of previous participants and, time permitting, church and bulletin announcements. If you want to be on the “tactical contact list” see me...and keep me alerted to possible movies that may be out, or soon to be released.
